Congratulations on your new FasTrak® toll tag! What's next?
Registering toll tags can help you keep track of your FasTrak® balance and avoid toll violations. Plus, with a registered toll tag, you can easily keep using the Express Lanes and toll bridges free or at a discounted rate if you meet vehicle occupancy requirements, even after you spend down the preloaded $200.
Keep reading to find out how to register and mount your toll tag, and add more balance to your FasTrak® account.
Registering your FasTrak® Toll Tag
If you already have a FasTrak® account, you can add your new toll tag to your existing account to use the combined balance when you have one tag in your vehicle. You can do this on your online FasTrak® account portal, or by calling the Customer Service Center.
If you don’t already have an account, you must open one to register your toll tag. To do this, you will have to choose a primary payment method. You can choose either debit/credit card, or cash/check/money order.
The process to open an account is different depending on the payment method you choose.
To pay with a credit or debit card:
To pay with cash, check, money order OR card:
If you choose a credit/debit card as your payment method, FasTrak® will automatically charge your card at least $25 to replenish your account balance once it starts to run low, which is typically a balance below $15. For this reason, FasTrak® recommends using a credit card instead of a debit card. Refer to the "Adding More Balance to your FasTrak® Account" section for more information about when and how much you will be charged.
If you don’t want your account to be automatically replenished, you can choose to reload manually by opening an account using cash/check/money order as your primary payment method.
Click the following sections to see step-by-step instructions for registering each account type.
Registering with a credit or debit card online
If you would like to register your toll tag using a debit/credit card, you may do so either online or by calling the Customer Service Center. The following instructions are for online registration.

- Provide the toll tag serial number found on the front side of the toll tag (starting with 101) and the activation code found on the mounting strip on the back side of the tag. The activation code contains both letters and numbers.
- Fill out the online form by providing a valid email address, your credit card number, and your valid vehicle information (including make, model, year, license plate number, and state.)
- Choose a username, password and 4-digit PIN to access your account.
- Choose your account start date. You can pick a date up to 90 days before today’s date to use your $200 credit to cover previously incurred tolls.
- You must check this box and click "Complete Order" to finish opening your account. Your card will NOT be charged at this point -- this is agreeing to future credit card charges once your balance runs low, typically under $15.

On the registration page, your balance will appear to be $25, which is standard for new debit/credit retail tags. However, when you review your account balance, the full $205 benefit will show up.*
- You are now registered! You can access your account information, including your balance, when you log in to your account or by calling the Customer Service Center.
*An extra $5 is included on all Community Transportation Benefit Program toll tags to cover the deposit fee for those who register using cash or check.

Mounting your FasTrak® Toll Tag
Once your toll tag is registered, mount it on the inside of your vehicle’s windshield to begin using it. Use the Velcro® mounting strips on the back of your tag to place it either above or next to your rearview mirror (preferred location) or on either bottom corner of your windshield (alternative location).
Adding More Balance to your FasTrak® Account
What happens once your $200 credit runs out? You can still keep using your toll tag if you add more funds on your account!
Click the following sections to learn more about adding balance to each account type.
Replenishing credit/debit card accounts
Once the balance on your credit/debit card account runs low, your account will automatically be replenished, and your card will be charged.
The amount charged to your card will be equal to one month’s average usage (based on the previous 90 days) or $25, whichever amount is greater.
This occurs once your account falls below either $15 or the minimum replenishment threshold. The minimum replenishment threshold is based on your average usage and is equal to two weeks’ worth of tolls.
Replenishing cash/check/money order accounts
There are three different ways to add more value to your cash account once the preloaded $200 is spent-down:
- Visit the FasTrak® Walk-in Center in-person to replenish your account using cash, check, or money order. The address is: 375 Beale St, San Francisco, CA 94105
- Mail a check or money order to FasTrak® at the following address:

- Visit any of the cash payment locations located around the Bay Area to replenish your account or pay a violation notice using cash (participating merchants include gas stations, convenience stores, and check cashing stores). See a map of locations here.
